Purpose and Need

Operational deficiencies currently exist at the I‐25/College Drive interchange.  They result primarily from the large number of trucks that use the interchange to access the truck stops adjacent to the interchange, and the close proximity of access points.  This project will improve operations at the I-25/College Drive interchange without impacting the existing structure over I-25 by construction of a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI).  The DDI is forward compatible with a future 4-lane design when traffic demand increases.

Project Purpose

1. Existing interchange proximity to I-25 & I-80 generates heavy left turns at this interchange as trucks access refueling stations.

2. Existing interchange doesn’t adequately accommodate current traffic volumes, particularly long distance truck traffic.

3. Proposed developments will put additional strain on the existing interchange.

Project Benefits

1. DDI will significantly reduce delay for vehicles entering and exiting the freeway at this interchange.

2. DDI will provide capacity for a 20 year horizon of projected traffic and planned developments, without costly modifications to the existing bridge.

3. If necessary, the current design may be modified to accommodate two additional travel lanes when traffic volumes increase beyond this horizon.
